There are an abundant of options for people who wish to improve his or her overall health. After an individual, has engaged on his or her path of sobriety, it is essential for him or her to self-care. Self-care can manifest in many different ways. Living a healthy lifestyle can fall under the larger umbrella of self-care. Living a healthy lifestyle can also aid in one’s ability to maintain his or her sobriety. Below are five ways an individual can set a foundation for living a healthy lifestyle.
- Eat Right
Food is the body’s fuel. What an individual consumes makes up a significant part of his or her energy level, weight, and mood. For example, there are certain foods that can help individuals with depression or ability to process sugar. Alternatively, there are foods that can contribute to obesity, depression, and even anxiety. The number of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and preservatives that can be found in many of the foods available today is alarming. In today’s society, there is significant emphasis placed on one’s physical appearance and various dieting options. However, eating properly can all go back to the simple food pyramid. Make sure you are eating the proper amount of each block on that pyramid and try to avoid (GMOs). At the grocery store, before purchasing an item, take a peek at the ingredient label and see if the listed ingredients are all pronounceable, recognizable, or even food items. It is essential to take an active role in the selection of one’s food intake.
The world can be extremely overwhelming, especially for an individual who is newly sober. Meditation can offer a person a bit of respite from the chaotic outside world. Meditation can be a long practice, or a short practice. The length of time an individual chooses to practice meditation does not correlate to the benefits one experiences from meditation. The act of getting still, turning inward, and focusing solely on oneself can be extremely empowering.
Some people love to sweat and exercise, and others do not. Regardless, it is essential for one’s wellbeing to take care of his or her physical body. There is a myriad of exercise possibilities available. Joining a gym and trying out various exercise machines can be invigorating. Depending on one’s geographical location, taking a hike can be an excellent way to get exercise. Simply going on a walk, indoors or outdoors, can be enough to get one’s endorphins flowing and heartrate up. Yoga can be a great way to both stretch out and activate muscles that may or may not be actively used. Swimming is another fantastic exercise option. The type of exercise one chooses to engage in is really irrelevant. What is important is that an individual carve out time, daily (even just ten minutes), to focus on his or her body and get a little exercise integrated into his or her daily life routine.
- Stay Hydrated
It may sound silly, but staying hydrated is one of the best things an individual can do for him or herself. One’s body is made up of around fifty percent of water. Fluids must always be replenished, as fluid is expelled from one’s body constantly. Drinking water helps to flush out unneeded toxins, aids in digestion, and can help to maintain moisture in one’s body. It has been said that if a person feels thirsty, he or she is already slightly dehydrated. It is imperative to stay hydrated for one’s overall health. This is an easy one—all you have to do is drink water.
- Spend Time In Nature
Mother Earth is a gift, and is available to everyone. It is important for an individual to take in the wonders of nature. Being outdoors, in the sun, can help to lift one’s mood, while also providing an ample amount of vitamin D. Trees, grass, natural bodies of water, all have great benefits. It is important for sober individuals to feel grounded, and being in nature can be particularly grounding. Making a conscious choice to spend time outdoors can be healing.
Everyone is different and will find different ways to experience self-care. If any of the aforementioned holistic tips do not resonate, it is important to find what does. Living a healthy lifestyle is essential when it comes to maintaining one’s sobriety. Creating healthy habits and patterns can help to place and keep an individual on a nourishing and sober path.
