Mindfulness is the practice of being consciously aware of one’s own thoughts, emotions, and feelings while simultaneously being able to remain nonjudgmental and neutral. It is the practice of continuously connecting to oneself and checking in with oneself in the present moment. A mindfulness practice is meant to help a person develop a level of self-awareness that will allow a person to avoid negatively spiraling out of control from difficult feelings, thoughts, or emotions. The treatment and recovery process from substance abuse or addiction will be a lifelong undertaking, and integrating a mindfulness practice into one’s life can be extremely helpful.

There are several ways that mindfulness techniques can help an individual on his or her journey through recovery. The regular practice of mindfulness can improve an individual’s stress management abilities. The simple task of focusing on the present, not thinking about or worrying about the past or future, will reduce a person’s stress level (mainly because there is less to think about). Mindfulness can actually improve the functioning of a person’s immune system. Due to the fact that high levels of stress can lower an individual’s immune system, learning to function with lower levels of daily stress will help to boost a person’s immune system. A person who regularly practices mindfulness will undoubtedly have a better understanding of his or her thoughts and feelings. This, in turn, can create a healthier relationship with oneself. It will also allow an individual to access his or her emotions, thoughts, and feelings more readily and, over time, with ease. This connects to another benefit of the practice of mindfulness, which is better self-awareness. A person who engages in mindfulness practices will be more in tune with his or her surroundings and how outside stimuli from one’s environment affects his or her body. This will allow a person to better react and respond to various situations in an authentic and healthy way.

Tips and Suggestions

There are a number of ways for individuals to practice mindfulness. The benefits of practicing mindfulness will be most robustly experienced if an individual incorporates it, with regularity, into his or her daily routine. If a person is new to the practice of mindfulness, it can be helpful for him or her to seek out a more structured method of practice. This can include attending a yoga class. In yoga, individuals are provided with the opportunity to experience a kind of moving meditation. A participant will move his or her body through several different yoga poses throughout the class, with the guidance of an instructor, while focusing on his or her breath and how his or her body feels in each pose. This intense focus on oneself is a great example of practicing mindfulness. A person will not be able to successfully participate in a yoga class if he or she is focused elsewhere, as many of the physical demands (i.e. balance poses) will not allow it. Participating in a simple meditation practice can help an individual practice mindfulness. Whether it be in a guided mediation class, or devoting a specific amount of time to practice meditation alone, this can be helpful in clearing one’s thoughts to allow for a deeper personal connection with oneself. Some people find that a mindfulness practice surrounding diet and healthy eating habits to be extremely destressing. There are several known food items (i.e. avocado, salmon, walnuts…etc.) that can help a person to increase his or her happiness. Improving one’s diet can also help to better an individual’s overall health by lowering weight. If a person is less stressed, happier, and healthier, a person’s ability to easily connect with him or herself will be a simpler task.
